| Replacing the Drives in a DS409
1. yes the DSM (the operating system) is on the drives
2. no, you can not replace all the drives and expect it to work
3. you must install at least one drive and make the system copy the DSM on that drive before you can replace the rest.it seems that this system was not intended for you to purchase without drives installed, other wise they would have come up with a way for you to access the DSM without having drives installed. I got around this by deleting the current volume (because I was going to replace all the drive eventually and 3 of the 4 had smart errors)
1. stop the services (sharing)
2. delete the shared folders
3. now delete the entire volume
* if you don't do them in the step provided or you try to skip a step it will say deleting for eternity and never delete.
4. replace one of the drives and create a volume using the extensive recover and bad sector mapping - it will copy the DSM to that drive as well.
5. once the creation completes, shut down the device and replace the rest of the drive.
6. now delete the new volume you created and create a new volume using all of the drive.
7. now you can create shares and such. Firmware upgrade 4.2

| Note: this system came as a package for Vibe which was a video storage system, I over wrote the firmware with the manufacture's actual firmware and now have access to the system's full functionality. Makes a wonderful NAS device, as noted above I replaced the orginal drives (because they were failing) with new Seagate NAS barracuda drives, made it faster and I tripled the storage space. |
